The Mount Marty community recently suffered a great loss in the passing of Father Jack Garvey. Although the timing of this sad event did not allow for a proper memorial in the issue of The Moderator just released, please be assured that we are planning something special for the March issue.

Father John “Jack” Garvey died on February 4, 2009 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Father Jack served as chaplain at Mount Marty College and Sacred Heart Monastery for 6 years. At the time of his death, Father Garvey was serving as chaplain for the Monastery.A scripture service was held on Friday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel on the campus. His funeral service was held on Saturday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m. in the Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel. Bishop Paul Swain, Bishop of the Sioux Falls diocese, as the Presider.
Father Jack felt strongly about the many injustices people suffered not only in our country but all over the world. He did not hesitate to speak out about them and we can thank him for his homilies that were both challenging and thought provoking.
