Lancer Men Fall to Red Raiders, Tigers

The Mount Marty College men’s basketball team dropped games to Northwestern College and Dakota Wesleyan University in Great Plains Athletic conference action last week.

On Wednesday, the Lancers traveled to Orange City, IA. where they lost to Northwestern 81-70.

The Lancers came out and played well in the first half. They had as much as a seven point lead at one point and came out with a 42-41 halftime lead.

“We came out and competed well,” Lancer coach Jim Thorson said.

In the second half the Red Raiders took the lead and held it for the remainder of the game.
They built their lead to 16 points at one point before the Lancers were able to cut the lead to five.

“Northwestern turned up the heat in the second half. They kept the pressure on us for most of the game,” Thorson said.

Leading the way for the Lancers was senior guard Pat Anderson who had 22 points and seven rebounds.

Senior point guard Chris Filsinger shot 4-for-6 from the field scoring ten points to go along with three assists.

The Lancers had a difficult time shooting in the second half. They went from 50 percent in the first half to only 37.5 percent in the second half.

Saturday the Lancers hosted DWU at Cimpl Arena and lost 79-69. The game marked the third time the Lancers have played the Tigers in the past month.

Contrary to the Northwestern game, the Lancers started out cold in the first half and struggled to find the net in the opening minutes of the game.

After falling 8-2 in the just four minutes into the game, the Lancers were able to play the Tigers competitively.

“It was opposite to our game against Northwestern in that it took us several possessions before we were able to get on the board,” Thorson said.

With :47 remaining and a 32-27 lead in the first half, the Tigers converted on a quick shot and
then forced a turnover. They hit a buzzer-beating three pointer to take a 37-27 lead into half.

This margin would stay intact throughout the second half and the Lancers could not break into the lead.

Anderson again led the Lancers, scoring 21 points with a 7-for-16 performance from the field.
Senior center Stan Johnson added 13 points and seven rebounds down low for the Lancers.

The Lancers travel to Sioux Falls on Wednesday to visit the University of Sioux Falls. They host
Dana College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Lancers Men Win on 20th Anniversary

On the 20th anniversary of the first event at Cimpl Arena, the Mount Marty Lancers honored their home with a one sided 64-51 victory over the Concordia University Bulldogs.

The Lancers picked up only their second Great Plains Athletic Conference victory against the struggling Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.

On their way to accomplishing this, the Lancers shot an outstanding 50 percent from the field and out-rebounded their opponents 33-20.

“We knew they had good players that could penetrate and shoot the ball well,” Lancer coach Jim Thorson said. “We were able to keep them at bay in the game and that led to our success.”

Senior Guard Pat Anderson led the way for the Lancers with 22 points. He shot 9-for-13 from the field, 1-for-1 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.

Seniors forwards Nathan Fischer and Stan Johnson each added ten points.

The Bulldogs began the game hot, making their first three shot attempts to give them a quick 8-4 lead.

“The first five minutes was good, but then it was a struggle for offense for the rest of game,” Bulldogs coach Grant Schmidt said.

The Lancers fought back with a 12-2 lead to give them a 18-12 lead.

During the run the Lancers received points at least two points from four out of their five starters. Anderson had four of the 12 points.

“I thought we started off lethargically on offense, but we took control and got the lead back,” Thorson said.

Keeping the lead throughout the first half was not a problem for the Lancers. At one point in the half, they had a 28-23 lead. They went into the half with a 31-27 lead.

After the half the Lancers broke the game open with a 16-0 run that spanned to the halfway point in the second half and gave the Lancers a 47-31.

Throughout the run the Bulldogs were ice cold, having trouble finding open shots and the inside of the net.

The run began with a steal by Pat Anderson after an errant pass by the Bulldogs. Anderson dribbled the ball coast-to-coast and converted the lay-up on the offensive side.

Anderson scored six points in the run along with an assist that he got after finding sophomore Justin Peters for a lay-up on a fast break.

Frustration set in for the Bulldogs who had trouble distributing the basketball and finding open shots.

They took their frustration out on the Lancers, sending them to the line 31 times. The Lancers went 17-for-26 from the free-throw line on the night.

The Lancers maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the game.

Mount Marty travels next to Orange City, IA where they will take on Northwestern University
on Wednesday.

Concordia University travels to Blair, Neb. where they take on Dana College on Tuesday.

Lancer Women Fall to Bulldogs

Coming into Saturday’s game ranked ninth in NAIA, the Concordia Bulldogs still knew that they would have their work cut out for them on the road against the Mount Marty Lancers.

The Bulldogs had a little trouble down the stretch, but still found a way to contain the Lancers 64-61 in Great Plains Athletic Conference action at Cimple Arena.

“We tried to emphasize controlling Wenbourne and the guard play of the Lancers and we did a good job of that throughout the game,” Bulldogs coach Drew Olson said.

Only four minutes into the first half, the Bulldogs (17-2, 8-2) jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead, part of a 5-0 run.

Concordia maintained a marginal lead until the Lancers went on a 7-0 scoring run at the end of the half.

During the run the Lancers (8-9, 2-6) received baskets from forward Amber Marsden, guard Katelynn Kunz, and a three-pointer from Tevan Wenbourne.

The run cut the Bulldog lead to 34-30 at the end of the first half.

“We had some decent looks, but the ball wasn’t going in the hole in the beginning of the game,”
Lancer coach Chuck Iverson said. “We started to get better looks as the half went on and shots started finding their way in.”

The second half began with both teams exchanging buckets and the Lancers taking a slim 39-38 lead.

Lancer guard Michelle Amundson scored seven consecutive Lancer points and forward Stacey Lickteig spun to the hoop and put the ball in the net to give her team the lead.

Concordia forward Melissa Tinkham took the lead back for the Bulldogs with a three-point play to make it 41-39 in favor of the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs kept a narrow lead on the Lancers throughout the majority of the half, but the Lancers were never out of striking distance.

Five consecutive points off a three-pointer from Concordia guard Danae Koopman and a breakaway lay-up by Whitney Stichka gave the Bulldogs a 58-52 lead nearing the end of the
game.

The Lancers rebounded quickly with six straight points of their own as Marsden, guar Dana Marquardt, and Amundson each scored.

Only moments later Bulldogs guard Liz Bauer scored on a lay-up opportunity to give them a 64-60 advantage.

After a free-throw from Kunz, the Lancers had two opportunities to tie the game but never converted.

“We were able to take things one possession at a time and made easy shots. We also forced them to a lot of difficult shots,” Olson said.

The Lancers travel to Orange City, IA on Wednesday to play Northwestern University. The Bulldogs travel to face Dana College on Tuesday.
