Soehl’s Make Their Mark on Lancers Softball

In her two years at Mount Marty College, Amanda Soehl has been a fixture in the outfield for Lancer Softball Coach Albert Fernandez. But she isn’t the only Soehl who has made a name as a Lancer.

Soehl, a sophomore from Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School, is just one member of her family who wore the Lancer navy and gold.

Alison Bailey played four years with the softball team under three different coaches. However, since she graduated the softball program has been a little more stable as Fernandez has remained with the team.

Part of this can be attributed to the Amanda’s father Curt Soehl who is an assistant coach with the team.

Soehl drives from his home in Sioux Falls to Riverside Park to help conduct practices and be in the dugout for games.

Amanda reveres her father for his dedication and positive thinking.

“He loves the game and wants our team to succeed because he knows our capabilities. He truly enjoys being a part of it.”

Among the things that Curt offers to the team is an optimistic outlook.

“He chooses to focus mainly on the positives of each game or practice, as well as what we can do to make ourselves better. He brings different perspectives to situations.”

Softball has been a part of the Soehl family since Amanda can remember. Soehl coached his daughters and his son since they were old enough to hold a bat.

With that in mind as well as the necessity for the correct atmosphere, Amanda and her father have established a different sort of relationship on the diamond.

“Our relationship on the field and on practice is a more serious, get down to business relationship. He is my coach and not my dad when we are on the field.”

Now that the season is under way, the Soehl family will use every ounce of energy to enable success for the Lancers.

Amanda has started nine games in center field and has been one of the Lancers most solid defenders. She hopes to continue her contributions throughout the season.
